A successful kitchen remodel is a coordinated systems project. Layout, cabinetry, appliances, lighting, ventilation, plumbing, electrical, surfaces, and finish details all have to work together—and the order of decisions matters.

Define the problem before choosing finishes

List what does not work today: traffic flow, storage, counter space, lighting, appliance locations, seating, ventilation, or connection to nearby rooms. Prioritize the changes that improve daily use, then choose finishes that support the plan.

Lock appliance and cabinet decisions early

Appliance dimensions affect cabinet openings, clearances, electrical loads, gas or water connections, ventilation, and countertop templating. Cabinet layout affects nearly every trade, so these selections should be coordinated before field work begins.

Understand the main cost drivers

Moving walls or utilities, custom cabinetry, premium appliances, extensive electrical work, specialty countertops, structural changes, and highly detailed tile or millwork can significantly increase scope. Keeping major utilities in efficient locations may preserve budget for visible finishes.

Build the schedule around decisions and lead times

Cabinetry, windows, specialty plumbing fixtures, electrical gear, and some appliances can have long lead times. Ordering strategy matters because demolition should not begin before critical materials and decisions are sufficiently controlled.

Plan for life during construction

Discuss dust protection, access routes, working hours, temporary food preparation, appliance storage, pet safety, debris removal, and daily cleanup. A strong logistics plan reduces disruption and protects the rest of the home.

Compare proposals by scope

Check demolition, disposal, protection, permits, trade coordination, cabinet installation, countertops, backsplash, painting, trim, fixture installation, final connections, and punch work. Clarify whether selections are fixed, allowance-based, or excluded.
